On achieving intelligent traffic-aware consolidation of virtual machines in a data center using Learning Automata
2018
Unlike the computational mechanisms of the past many decades, that involved individual (extremely powerful) computers or clusters of machines, cloud computing (CC) is becoming increasingly pertinent and popular. Computing resources such as CPU and storage are becoming cheaper, and the servers themselves are becoming more powerful. This enables clouds to host more virtual machines (VMs). A natural consequence ofthis is that many modern-day data centers experience very high internaltraffic within the data centers themselves. This is, of course, due to the occurrence of servers that belong to the same tenant, communicating between themselves. The problem is accentuated when the VM deployment t…
Green Data Centres providing ancillary services to power grid
2015
This work investigates the possibility for a Data Centre to provide services to the Grid. In particular, the paper simulates a sudden shift of frequency because of a power decrease and estimates how a real-life Data Centre can contribute the secondary frequency regulation.
PTNet: An efficient and green data center network
2017
International audience; In recent years, data centers have witnessed an exponential growth for hosting hundreds of thousands of servers as well as to accommodating a very large demand for resources. To fulfill the required level of demand, some approaches tackled network aspects so to host a huge number of servers while others focused on delivering rapid services to the clients by minimizing the path length between any two servers. In general, network devices are often designed to achieve 1:1 oversubscription. Alternatively, in a realistic data center environment, the average utilization of a network could vary between 5% and 25%, and thus the energy consumed by idle devices is wasted. This…
Optimal standalone data center renewable power supply using an offline optimization approach
2022
Abstract Because of the increasing energy consumption of data centers and their C O 2 emissions, the ANR DATAZERO2 project aims to design autonomous data centers running solely on local renewable energy coupled with storage devices to overcome the intermittency issue. In order to optimize the use of renewable energy and storage devices, a MILP solver is usually in charge of assigning the power to be supplied to the data center. However, in order to reduce the computation time and make the approach scalable, it would be more appropriate to use a polynomial time algorithm. This paper aims at showing and proving that it is possible to provide an optimal power profile via a deterministic algori…
History of Data Centre Development
2012
International audience; Computers are used to solve different problems. For solving these problems computer software and hardware are used, but for operations of those computing facilities a Data Centre is necessary. Therefore, development of the data centre is subordinated to solvable tasks and computing resources. We are studying the history of data centres’ development, taking into consideration an understanding of this. In the beginning of the computer era computers were installed in computing centres, because all computing centres have defined requirements according to whom their operation is intended for. Even though the concept of ‘data centre’ itself has been used since the 1990s, t…
Wireless versus Wired Network-on-Chip to Enable the Multi- Tenant Multi-FPGAs in Cloud
2021
The new era of computing is not CPU-centric but enriched with all the heterogeneous computing resources including the reconfigurable fabric. In multi-FPGA architecture, either deployed within a data center or as a standalone model, inter-FPGA communication is crucial. Network-on-chip exhibits a promising performance for the integration of one FPGA. A sustainable communication architecture requires stable performance as the number of applications or users grows. Wireless network-on-chip has the potential to be that communication architecture, as it boasts the same performance capability as wired solutions in addition to its multicast capacities. We conducted an exploratory study to investiga…
Generalization Capacity Analysis of Non- Intrusive Load Monitoring using Deep Learning
2020
Appliance Load Monitoring is a technique used to monitor devices existing in homes, industry or naval vessels. Acquisition of device-level data can provide great benefits in many areas such as energy management, demand response, and load forecasting. However, the monitoring process is often provided with a costly installation, as it requires a large number of sensors and a data center. Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) is an alternative and cost-efficient load monitoring solution. Simply put, NILM is the process of obtaining device-level data by analyzing the aggregated data read from the main meter that measures the electricity consumption of the whole house. Before NILM analysis is per…
A survey on data center network topologies
2018
Data centers are the infrastructures that support the cloud computing services. So, their topologies have an important role on controlling the performance of these services. Designing an efficient topology with a high scalability and a good network performance is one of the most important challenges in data centers. This paper surveys recent research advances linked to data center network topologies. We review some representative topologies and discuss their proprieties in details. We compare them in terms of average path length, network fault tolerance, scalability and connection pattern techniques. Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018. Acknowledgment. This publication was made possible by …
The SMAP mission combined active-passive soil moisture product at 9 km and 3 km spatial resolutions
2018
Abstract The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission was launched on January 31st, 2015. The spacecraft was to provide high-resolution (3 km and 9 km) global soil moisture estimates at regular intervals by combining for the first time L-band radiometer and radar observations. On July 7th, 2015, a component of the SMAP radar failed and the radar ceased operation. However, before this occurred the mission was able to collect and process ~2.5 months of the SMAP high-resolution active-passive soil moisture data (L2SMAP) that coincided with the Northern Hemisphere's vegetation green-up and crop growth season. In this study, we evaluate the SMAP high-resolution soil moisture product deri…
PTNet: A parameterizable data center network
2016
This paper presents PTNet, a new data center topology that is specifically designed to offer a high and parameterized scalability with just one layer architecture. Furthermore, despite its high scalability, PTNet grants a reduced latency and a high performance in terms of capacity and fault tolerance. Consequently, compared to widely known data center networks, our new topology shows better capacity, robustness, cost-effectiveness and less power consumption. Conducted experiments and theoretical analyses illustrate the performance of the novel system. 2016 IEEE. Scopus
